Lewiston Response: Lessons, Perspectives, and Resilience After Mass Casualty Violence

This headliner session provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary review of the Lewiston active shooter mass casualty event. Structured in three segments, the program offers a powerful and balanced examination of the incident from those most deeply impacted. The session begins with a patient-centered perspective, sharing the lived experience of those directly affected and highlighting the human impact of mass casualty violence on individuals, families, and communities.

The second segment brings together first responders, EMS clinicians, and healthcare team members to discuss operational response, scene management, coordination, and clinical challenges encountered during the incident. Emphasis is placed on lessons learned, system strengths, and opportunities for improvement across the continuum of care.

The final segment focuses on the long-term psychological impact of such events, led by an EMS physician who responded to the Newtown, CT shooting. This portion explores post-traumatic stress, coping strategies, and pathways toward personal and professional growth following exposure to critical incidents. Together, these perspectives provide a unique opportunity for reflection, learning, and growth, equipping clinicians with insight to improve future response and support both patient and provider well-being.
