This 4-hour training is an interactive presentation that translates theoretical concepts into their real-world application and addresses challenges practitioners face today in making suicide assessments in a variety of practice settings. Regardless of the setting (i.e., hospitals, agencies, schools, private practices), the assessment of suicide risk requires understanding of risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors that are supported by validated assessment tools and the use of prescribed documentation standards. What can elevate assessment to a more competent standard of care and protect clinicians from malpractice litigation is conscious grounding in ethical principles that honor inherent human value as well as provide mental health professionals with a framework for making what can be difficult clinical decisions. Led by the co-chairs of the NASW Task Force on Standards of Care for Suicide Assessment, this content is applicable for all professionals who want to enhance their skills in what can be a difficult area of practice.  The training model incorporates individual and small group activities into didactic content.

Two 10-minute breaks are used to encourage participants to practice a self-care activity. A copy of the PowerPoint slides and relevant handouts will be provided in digital format prior to the training to facilitate achievement of the learning objectives.
